Oops didnt mean to post that yet...
what Im getting at is I have to replace most of my exhaust system starting about a foot before the Cat but If I dont have to use the factory replacement with the bolted union it opens up other options. Im just not willing to sacrifice any performance at this point.

It doesn't take any power away. It adds minimal back pressure, and without atleast some back pressure your motor will not run as well. And yes it is a Federal law that you must have one.

absolutely must have one,
I was simply lamenting that if I didn't need one it would be nice since mine was damaged and It was a pain to get it fixed, but I found that it had been going on me and constricting the flow, when i put a new one on i got back a ton of power and economy, R

I run the MagnaFlow HI-Flow cat i got it brand new for $50 at my local exhaust shop. it is a 2.5" in/out. It was brand new in the box. He buys them bulk and at cost(sometimes cheaper) so he then relays that discount to the customer.

About a year ago a friend of mine in Xenia, OH (NEVER go there, terrible place) put a straight pipe in place of the cat, and I helped him do it thinking that since they don't do emissions he wouldn't have any problems. About 5 months later in August he passed one of those emissions monitors on an onramp (at least that's who he thinks tipped off the police). He was pulled over and his truck was impounded. He paid a $2300 ticket. Any mechanic that removes the cat for you can get 5 yrs in jail and a fine of up to $10K.

I dont have a cat on mine I welded in a original 40 series flowmaster 2.5 in and a 2.5 off set I turned it around backward's and put on a 3 inch tip I get a lot of complements on the way it sound's not loud but sounds like a v8 its got a deep mucle car sound .
I know a lot of locals who are worried about that ticket so they took there's off hollowed it out and put it back on. So now they have one and IF they get caught they will get 30 days to fix it and no ticket. And after inspection they will probably put it right back. I don't run one on my 95 but its not registered and no longer pounds the pavement.
