You could drop another torquey inline 6 in it again but you do have options, like a v8 swap for an even more custom rig but bigger isn't always better and you would need to scrap that new tranny rebuild for a whole new driveline.

If it really burns oil, you need to know if it is valve seals or piston rings.
Valve seals replacement is probably 150-200, 2 hours job.
Engine with 250K miles cannot have good valve seals!
If it is piston rings, most likely, they are just stuck.
Drain oil, change filter and use:
1 quart of ATF
1 bottle of "stop smoke"
20W50 oil.
Just drive it.
ATF will clean up rings, stop smoke and 20W50 oil will compensate oil viscosity decrease by ATF.
If oil becomes dirty, you have to change it to the same mix.
Would the Stop Smoke remedy and 20W50 Cure Blow-By? Also I have always used 10W30. This won't shock it will it? Ive got 250K on mine.

Pour a can of 'RESTORE' in it.

I'd also suggest this.

20W50, thinned out with some ATF, is close enough viscosity at operating temperature. Cold it will be pretty heavy though.
