Exclamation New Distributor but no start

So I was trying to get my check engine light to turn off so I decided I'd try a new dist. but now it wont start.

I really didn't mark anything.

I lined up the Crank to the 0 degree mark before removing the old one

When I went to put the new one in I couldn't get it to line up with the clap hole so I just hand cranked the pulley until the distributor plopped into place and rotated the Dist. into place.

Then I turned the crank with my finger over the hole of the #1 spark plug until I felt compression and then proceeded to line up the marking on the crank pulley to the 0 degree mark.

Inserted spark plug, Dist cap, plugged in wires (Correctly) and cam sensor and so on.

So when I cranked the engine by key it turns over then when I stop it gives me a couple small kicks and then dies.

Any help will be appreciated please!! I really need this fixed... Thank You

I got it to where the engine turns all the way over idles for about a second and dies. This was after I tinkered with the distributor and oil pump notch and got the rotor to line completely up with the mark I made where the raised #1 is on the cap.

Still looking for help... thanks

It's helpful for the forum if you'd provide information regarding Year, engine, model etc if you're looking for some guided advice.

Default Re time new dist

Been through this.

Find the timing mark on the crank, set it, and try backing off one tooth at a time on the dist timing gear.

It sucks, and I spent 2 whole days finally getting it right, but chances are you are only one tooth off on the dist gear. Put the rotor on and make sure it points at the 5pm position when it's timed at TDC with the crank.

Good luck, and be patient. Assemble. Test. And try it one tooth at a time.

Default Great write up with pics

Use this for a reference.

The key is getting the dist shaft in the right place.

Don't have any idea what either of you dudes are working on, how hard is it to fill out some simple data like a listing year?

All together now, everybody, ready? what's it called?

I always forget things like that. It's a 1996 4.0L Straight 6. Thanks for the help so far guys I worked on it some more and had then same problems but this time it fought a little more to stay running before it died. I ended up putting the old one back in because I have to drive to work.

Thanks again!
