Mine has a **** you turn from blue to red. It was real spongy and stopped about 3/4 of the way to the red. In my case it was simple to take the reveal off and unbolt the heater module...it might be worth the 10 minutes to check this out. Once out and in your hands you might be able to hear the trap doors opening and closing (if there are trap doors).
