OP, it doesn't really sound like you have any ridiculous power setup. Anything bigger than 1awg is pretty overkill. If you're just running a basic setup with your stock alternator, you'd be fine with 4awg.
Save yourself a few bucks, because thick wire gets expensive along with the copper lugs you will need.
Tractor supply should have 1,2,4awg welding cable to use, along with the copper lugs you can solder on.

You can never go too big with wire

and normally, you can get those battery cable crimp ons from walmart or the local parts place. at walmart they are on the battery rack somewhere and at the local autoparts place, they are in the self help aisle

[QUOTE=07Negative;588224]I use a Red Top. Forget the made in Mexico mess. Buy one from a reputable dealer and if anything goes wrong with it. They will take care of you. I've been using them for a long time. Zero issues. You might want to consider the Yellow top though. I believe the blue one is Marine (don't quote me on that one).
QUOTE]
i run the red top in mine, and my understanding of the difference between red and yellow is while yes the red top can be submerged, the yellow is actually completely sealed. the blue is marine grade and yea they work well but because they are meant to constantly be charged/drained for the duration of their useful lives, they wear out quickly in trucks where they hold a somewhat constant charge. hth.

I've been making my own cables since the 70's, I like 2 ga to 00. I have some old bolt cutters that I file down and use for crimpers. I dump in a solder plug and then crimp, crimping will do by itself though. I like using the marine terminals on the batt. I always get the batts that have both top post and side post.

Fixing your jeep as a b-day gift?? She sounds like a keeper. I have an optima yellow top, best battery I've ever used. I run two 100 watt driving lights, two 130 watt KCs, an H4 headlight upgrade with IPF high power bulbs as well as a sound system. Never had an issue and I've used it multiple times to jump people's cars in the student commuter lot.

cause someone took his jeep when he wasn't there.
you can crimp with anything. we had a little anvil with a top piece when i used to work at a battery shop here in town. and you can get shrink wrap in any color you want so you are good all hte way around.

Leaving the keys in the Jeep is a bad idea. What if somebody else had taken it? I would NEVER leave my keys in my Jeep. Why would you leave them in there anyway?
