I have a '98 and removed and cleaned mine about a month ago. This article is the best I've seen showing how to go about it.
http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoNSSrebuild.htm
I will say that I had to use needle-nosed vice grips to remove a couple of the screws from the switch housing to get it apart. Years of corrosion had done their worst, and the phillips screw driver just stripped the head without ever turning the screws.
Also, I didn't bother disconnecting all of the connectors. I just unhooked the battery, cut the zip ties where the article describes, and that gave me enough slack to let the switch hand down enough for me to work on it.
All in all, about an hour to remove, disassemble, clean, reassemble, and reinstall.
