Default neutral safety switch

So my engine light came on nd the code is p0705. I have already did my research on it nd have read to take out nd clean the nss. I have spoke to 2 mechanics nd both say i need to buy a new one. They have not seen it, just telling me that. All of you guys have posted to refurbish it. What should i do?

Pop it off & clean it first. If you destroy it upon removal or there is no change, replace it, but pricey.

definitely try to clean it, heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new one, I just took mine off and found the back was broke and some parts are missing, must have been like that for a while judging by the gunk build up, they are kind of a pain to remove. good luck dt.

Try to follow the steps on this forum to clean it. There is no cheap substitute for an aftermarket one.

I will be having the mechanic clean it then. If that doesn't work what brand nss should I buy?

Have a look at this before you put it in the shop..

I don't know your "hands on" experience, but this is really pretty simple.. no "special tools" needed. Good luck!

If looking for a new NSS, OEM brands are preferred.

Having said that, here in Oz, the dealer asked $1024 for it...plus 4 weeks delivery. Like I was some effin idiot... That was the turning point in my XJ career when I decided to , from then on, do my own sourcing and repairs. Although in a big city, getting Jeep parts here is a costly business.
So, found a NSS for $46 in the States and had it shipped. Although ofcourse unlikely comparable in quality, its still going strong 1.5 years later..and for that price, happy to replace it again if needed.
But if you can afford it: buy a quality one.

Thanks for the link. As for tools I don't have any and also have no where to work on car at the moment. I am not handy at all. If I had my own place with garage things would be different but for now I will be going to a shop.

I've seen nss for $35-$45 but read that I'm better to refurbish mine than buy those.

I would also attest for trying to clean it and if that fails, finding one on ebay for $30-$50. I've had the new one off of ebay for a year now and have no problems. Do you have a 96 and older or 97 and newer?
Here is a link for a 97 and newer for an example....

to took mine out, cleaned it, then relocated it to my engine bay (yes it sounds weird but it works fine in the engine bay and it keeps the mud and gunk from building back up inside it)

So you just leave it in the Park position at all times then? No backup lights and will start even in gear?
