I am new to the Cherokee Forum but not new to forums. I am a member of titantalk.com and have found that forums are the best place for knowledge...which brings me here.

I have a chance to get a 1991 Cherokee Larado 4x4, 4.0. It appears to be very clean on the inside and out for being 22 years old, and it has 145k on it. I don't know any other history.

I do know that the last time it was used on a road trip, it got hot, and upon inspection later in a garage, the mechanic believed that either there is a blown head gasket or its a cracked head.

I did a quick search and this seems to be common for the inline 6, 4.0 engine.

Is it worth the $1300?

I can turn a wrench....

id skip it. I'm sure you can find a better quality cherokee out there, without the need to spend money on engine work

It really depends if it would be worth buying it. If it was run for awhile after it over heated and the kept it on the road after the over heating. It could have damaged a lot more then just the head or gasket. It they kept running it it could have damaged the bearing and a lot more. You may end up having to replace the entire engine. Personally I would look a little more and try one that doesn't need the repairs that you may need. Good Luck on you search. BTW, The ones with the 0331 head are the problem ones. The started to put in the 0331 heads on the 4.0 from mid to late 1999-2001. Although not all of the later 1999 had the 0331 heads. You can tell by looking on the drivers side of the head it will be stamped on the side.
