Needing Guidance... np242 help!
Greetings everyone!
Needing tech knowledge for my lady's '91 Cherokee 4.0L/AT with a np242. T-case decided to take a dive after we picked-up our little one from day-care. Vehicle still moves forward/reverse but with a lovely grinding, scraping noise. Situation is... recently been laid-off & have a "new" little one is on the way... so cash is extra tight.
If I can't find a cheap but good np242 in SoCal I'll have to skin this cat another way. I'm thinking of converting it into a two-wheel drive for the time being. Obvious things... remove front driveshaft, as for the transfer-case... aside from removing the chains, what else do I need to do to complete this? Are there any safety issues needing to be addressed? I appreciate any advice/help & thank you to all!
P.S. What specific auto tranny came with '91 Cherokee 4LTR's?

Seems to me you could get a 231 or 242 TC from the JY for nearly the same cost as converting the rig to 2 wd. You are going to need a Aw4 2wd tail piece, output and driveshaft at minimum.
