Default Need to Tap Into the Cherokree Forum Collective

I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport 4.0, Auto, C8.25 & D30 in front, and a NP231 with a little over 170k miles.

I have an issue with a clunk and a whine.

1. At about 30-40 mph I hear a high pitched whine only while I accelerate. If I release the gas it stops and sometimes makes kinda like a bouncing/whining noise. I have checked the pinion and the drieshaft u joints for any kind of play but I am not getting any. I had it in park and not jacked off the ground...this wrong way to check it.

I do have a wheel bearing whining also when I turn to the right so I need to replace the left. The whines along with the other noise.

2. I know I have something with play in it somewhere because if I let off the gas and then accelerate again, it will make a "clunk" noise. I can accelerate and decelerate a certain way so it doesn't do it though. I just ease off the acceleator.

If I am in 3rd(on the shifter) and I release the gas and as it downshifts, sometimes it will make the same clunk.

The front driveshaft has a little bit more play than the rear does while rotating it about it's axis. Say as much and 12 o clock to 1 o clock.

You guys have any ideas what it could be?

Thanks in advance.

Also, it shifts up and down fine. In drive it doesn't clunk at all when downshifting. It only does it in 1/2 & 3rd....guess because it shifts difference than in drive?

Transfer case fluid OK? U joints all look OK? Maybe pull the front driveshaft and see if the noise goes away.

Have you greased the front driveshaft slip joint?

There may be something to this. I know when I am running the A/C, it seems like the A/C pulls more power from the engine than it should. When the compressor kicks on, it almost feels like the same clunk from the draw of it. But I think the draw from the engine speed is transfered into my driveline and I then feel the clunk.

Yes sir, transfer case fluid is new and has about 8k miles on it....and full.

I have thought about pulling it, maybe when I replace my exhaust I will just leave it off.

Yep, it is full of grease but I have not greased the rear. Could it make this noise even if the movement it is in/out? The noise seems like it would be from something rotating. Could be wrong and am open to anything. I will grease the rear soon.
