Default need some help

My son took my Jeep back to school this semester, well he called me this evening and said the battery went dead from him leaving the map lights on. He said the campus police used one of those jump starter boxes and jumped it off. Started up and ran as long as he was giving it gas but as soon as he let off the gas, it died. Now I've got to go to Asheville and see what I can do. Any help will be greatly appreciated! It's a 1998 Cherokee SE with the 4.0 completely stock. Oh,yea...I tried a search on here and came up empty. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

my girlfriends 96 did that. The battery was dead from sitting for a long time before we picked it up. we threw it on a slow charger over night and 0 issues since and its driven from CT to Fla and been in fla for 2 months now. easy fix is just throw a new battery in it.

Battery was really dead. Chrysler's computer system is pretty dumb when it comes to relearning itself. That is why it wouldn't run with out throttle. If you let it run with your foot in the throttle it would eventually sort itself out. Easy fix replace battery and let it idle while being watched and drive it around after a couple minutes. Do easy driving around the parking lot to get it to learn how it run. Did this at the Chrysler dealership I worked at and what I had to do to get my old wrangler running after sitting for a year with a dead battery.
