Okay im going to try and discribe this as best i can. My current audio set up is weak and Id like to upgrade a little.. Right now i have a head unit that i think puts out 40 watts? i want to change this to the sony explode that has the ipod adapter and i want to change my speakers out.
Ive also been toying around with the idea of putting subs in... My main goal is to make my audio system louder, and i really want to hook up my ipod to a head unit.
Any ideas?

Replace the factory speakers with some new 5 1/4" ones. I just added a $65 Alpine SPW-10 sub, rated at 250 watts RMS, single voice coil at 4 ohms and a $130 Sound Ordnance M-1350 amp rated at 210 watts into 4 ohms. 8 gauge wiring kit cost $40. Went into a custom made ported box I got a couple years ago. My sub hits nice and hard without being overpowering to the rest of the music.
also if you are looking for loud you can also hook up a amp to some good 6x9s and that will pump some mids and highs more than enough!!! and if you have subs behind it then it will sound like you are live at a concert...
hope this helps my 2 cents...

I'd personally go with a dual 4 ohm voice coil 12" sub. They are pretty powerful and you can wire it for 8ohm if you want it to be clear with your speakers, or wire it for 2 ohm if you want really deep kicking bass, or if you get two dual voice coil subs you could have any ohm load you want. Just make sure you get an amp that gets near your sub specs (2 or 8 ohm, xxx Watts). I don't think it matters how good your small speakers are, if you have your subs handling the low frequencies then your small speakers will only handle the light stuff, and won't distort as soon because they won't have to handle the bass. I've done speakers for 6 cars (3 mine) and I've always gotten cheap speakers (it just matters to me that they're new and not blown) and expensive subwoofers and amps. My cherokee still has stock speakers in front, but when they only handle the high freq. and my subs handle the rest I can't hear myself singing (horribly).
I had aftermarket 5.25" speakers in mine. Just switched them out for Alpine S-Type 6.5" in both the front doors and the rear soundbar. They are a tight fit in the doors, but no modifications necessary, and just need to use self tapping screws to hold them in the back since they are a bit bigger. No cutting is required. They sound so much better now than before. I would put a sub in mine, but I use the space in the back more times than not.
