Unless the XJ is different than most other vehicles, the mirror glass is glued to a backing plate. I pick the broken mirror out with a screwdriver or small pick, clean up the plate and use silicone adhesive to attach the new mirror.

This. Does the new mirror have the backing plate? If not, follow these steps. If I'm not mistaken, the backing plate either 'pushes' in to the motor/movement mechanism or it slides in. But if you just have the glass with no backing plate then you gotta pick the glass off. Best tools are picks from harbor freight that come with different types, curved, straight et cetra.

Their was a kid at work that thought safety glasses were ugly and not cool enough to wear. One little sliver of glass, a 45min drive to the ER. All over!!
