NEED LOTS OF HELP!!!! Please?
Hello Everyone! I need help with this 1996 Jeep Cherokee that i bought off a dude that belonged to his son. His son was a moron. He did nothing to take care of it. With that in mind, I am having to do 10 years worth of maintenance because his son was a moron. Did I mention his son was a moron?
Here's a list of what I've done so far.
Transmission Pan Gasket leak fixed along with Tranny fluid filter.
Oil Pan Gasket changed due to a leak.
New Brakes and rotors.
New OEM Muffler with exhaust pipe.
New Tires.
New Oil Pressure Sensor.
I still have to change out the Valve Cover Gasket and the shocks. I bought Monroe OEM replacement shocks and will do that one this weekend.
- Problems -
1. Oil Pressure light is still on. WTH!? How do I fix this?
2. My Ultra-Guage gave an alarm of high temp. But the light on the instrument cluster was not lit? The temp went up to 255.5 degrees! Is this normal? What's the norm for this? Any ideas?
3. My speedometer is all sorts of crazy right now. It goes from 0-45 to 15 then back up. And the gas gauge does that too! Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone?
As you can see I have a bit left. Might be major things but so far this is it. IF anyone can help me out, that would be appreciated! I'm also in Woodbridge, VA, so if you're bored this weekend and would like to help turn some wrenches, that's cool too!

1. Oil Pressure light is still on. WTH!? How do I fix this? Get a mechanical gauge and get an actuall pressure reading.
2. My Ultra-Guage gave an alarm of high temp. But the light on the instrument cluster was not lit? The temp went up to 255.5 degrees! Is this normal? What's the norm for this? Any ideas? Replace the sending unit on the back of the cylinder head.
3. My speedometer is all sorts of crazy right now. It goes from 0-45 to 15 then back up. And the gas gauge does that too! Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone? Replace the VSS in the t-case tail cone.
Pull the pump and clean the rheosat...or check the wiring for poor connections....including the grounds behind the drivers side cover in the rear of the rig.

Do you have the gauge package or just warning lights? They use different oil pressure senders. The "gauge" sender is more common, you may have been sold that one.

Mechanic did the mechanical gauge and said it was good.
Didn't know there was a sending unit back there. But after taking a gander at my coolant, it's brownish-green. I am going to do a coolant flush to see if that works first.
VSS? But the Gas Gauge does the same thing? Does that control both?
40 oil/filter changes? No man! Just coolant to do for now. Brake, steerign and transmission will wait for now.
I have warning lights.

Another question.
The insturment gauge on mine doesn't have a Tachometer or any other gauges like all the other Jeeps have. I'm wondering if I were to grab another one that does have those gauges and just plug it in, would it work? Are the gauges specific to each model meaning would a Sport instrument panel work on mine even though mine is not a Sport? Are they interchangable? It seems to me (it makes sense that this would be a cost saving thing) that Jeep would use all the same plugs, it's just each panel is different. Know what I mean?

No.
IMHO, you need to make darn sure everything mechanical is up to snuff before you complicate things by attempting to change clusters and sensors and wiring.
The crazy gauge readings may be innocent, or you might have real major problems.
Isolate the cause and fix.

What you are experiencing is one hell of a coincidence to be all actual faults. Like Radi said, the sensors that drive the gauges are different than the ones that drive the idiot lights (fluctuating voltages of an analog signal reading can cause a dummy light to just blink), so make sure the oil pressure sending unit is the right one. That said, if you pinch a proper gauge cluster with tach etc, youll need to replace some sensors with ones that give an actual reading. (dummy light ones can just make the needles twitch or flap around)
HOWEVER, before diving into the gauge or sensors and so on, a lot of XJs benefit from a ground refreshing. This could be the cause of your glitchy cluster. Do some searching on here for freshening grounds and see where that gets you. The process is mostly cleaning corrosion, best of all its free (unless you find a broken wire of course)

Spend some time on Craigslist looking at cars for sale, lol. That'll answer your question.
Cars photographed sitting over a huge oil spot. "Transmission works fine". No it didn't. It was out of fluid.
Interior shots with the oil pressure gauge at about 2psi and the warning light on. "Runs Great Drive Anywhere". Knocked like rocks in a blender.
And then there was the "minor interior fire", lol. Didn't bother looking at that one.
So yeah, they're out there.

all in all, i have to do a radiator flush, shocks this weekend, and an alignment. Then chase wires during the week along with that ground refreshening. I want it safe to drive with my new born baby...
Thank you all for the help and advice. i'm sure i'll have more questions for you guys! Thanks again!

Okay so I've done the radiator flush and the temp is still going up to about 235. I figure I'd buy a thermostat and toss that in. I really don't want to do the water pump but if the thermostat doesn't work then that's the next thing that needs to be replaced right?
