Default Need Help With Temperature Gauge 96 XJ

Hi All,
I need a little help with troubleshooting the Temperature Gauge. Here is the scenario.

Vehicle - 1996 Cherokee 4.0 4x4 Automatic - mostly unmolested engine bay

Project - Gauge cluster swap from the idiot light to the 6 gauge cluster

Problem - Cluster swap is complete and the 2 sending units are in. 5 of the six gauges work as they should. Temp Gauge is not working at all. No movement from the needle whatsoever.

What I tried so far was to stick a piece of wire into the plug that goes to the gauge and ground it. When I turned the key to on, no movement of the needle at all. I need help with how to troubleshoot the gauge itself vs the wiring. Is there a way for me to test the gauge on the bench? Or should I start somewhere else?

Thanks,
Eric

I haven't done this swap, but I think remember someone saying that the gauge requires a different temp sender. Remember, on the 96 you have two senders. One tells the ECM what's going on with the engine, the other drives the gauge. For the 97 and up they fixed that stupidity and went to one sender.

Thanks Mark. I am aware of the Coolant Temp Sender at the back of the engine. I did replace that one. The Coolant Sensor on the T-Stat housing is just for the ECM and Fan. I am wondering if anyone knows the procedure to just test the gauge?

Thanks,
Eric
