Need help - Speedometer out, engine light on
My son turned 16 earlier this year and started taking auto shop at school. Great excuse to get a project started so I found a 92 XJ with only 75k miles and in solid shape all around. I haven't done much car work since I sold my CJ5 years ago so we are starting slow just doing all the basic maintenance before we start converting it to a serious offroad rig. Anyway, today we replaced the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Simple enough but then we took it for a test drive and the speedometer wasn't working and the Check Engine Light stayed on......??? Total head scratcher. Maybe we messed up an electrical connection or ground while replacing the plugs and wires? Any suggestions on how to fix would be greatly appreciated.

All I can offer is that I think 92 is a mechanical cable driven speedometer. Probably just a coincidence? Hope that isn't the reason for the unusually low miles! And Welcome! You might try bumping/reposing when there are sharper guys than me poking around. Good luck, Don
Edit.
Whoops! was 10 years later there was no dizy.

Thanks guys. I will try the key trick later today and see what i can find out. For other newbies with similar problems here is some good info I found researching the above responses:

Regarding the low mileage i was also concerned when the speedometer quit working that maybe it had been racking up miles for years that weren't showing up. However everything is in really good shape except the bushings and other rubber parts. The guy who sold it to me said it was his grampa's and had been in storage for years when he got to old to drive but he was quite the salesman. However there are "creases" in the tire sidewalls that might have been caused by it sitting for years in one place so for now i'm pretty confident that the mileage is pretty close to reality. Either way - we got what we got now.
