I need to know if a 2000 fuel tank will fit on my 96...I just got home and smelled gas, checked under the jeep, and of course there's gas leaking from the tank. I checked around and touched it and it crunched...rust! I have a donor 89 but its sitting in about a ft of snow completely covered. I'm not going to try, nor do I have time and patience to shovel out the 2' drift thats under the rear end. I checked CL and only found a 2000 tank. I cannot find any info on this anywhere. I need to change it asap. Like today, its my DD!

Not sure if it fits size-wise, but the fuel pump assembly on the 96 is in front of the tank and in the post updates is on top of the tank....so IF it would physically fit, you still would have to mod is I guess...

I would drop the 96 tank and get a good look at it. If it is just a couple of pinholes, use JB weld. The stuff does a good job if you sand the metal around the hole(s)until shiny. I did this with my 96 and ran it for a year with no leaks. The body got so bad that I got rid of it but it still held gas.

no work tomorrow on account of snow...I am going the jb weld route until my89xj hooks me up with his tank next weekend. I decided i would just put a bucket under it to catch the gold. No worries, I will filter it before its used in the mower or chain saw. As per the tank retro fit, not going to happen with out modifications. thank you guys.
