According to the VIN decoder my 96 XJ country 4.0 came with a HD 117amp Alternator. All parts stores only show a 90amp. Where can i find a 117amp?

Pepboys had it Part Number 15689V. I upgraded my 90amp to the 117 on my 94.

I assume that it was plug and play? Any side effects?

Find a big one, like 130amp or larger... that way you can put more lights on the bumper and roof.

Get it rebuilt by a local mom and pop shop. I paid $125 to up grade the stock alternator to 125 AMPS. No worries about slave shop remans or "new" 3rd world ones.

Pepboys website shows that this is a 120A alternator and does not "fit" my 96 Cherokee. I assume its for a Grand Cherokee.

I'm liking this idea. How many more amps can a shop "squeeze" out of an anlternator when rebuilding? Are there rebuild "upgrade" kits available?

Depends on what you started with. There are limits to what can be done. Best way to find out is to find a good local shop and ask them what they can do.

I've never seen one. You have to replace the windings, and that's not exactly a home-brew job. A kit would have to include a new stator and some other miscellaneous parts, and would probably cost more than a new alternator of the same capacity.

Really, finding an existing alternator online is probably easier and cheaper.

There is a shop in Jackson, Rogers Alternator and Starter, 40 years in business. That should be the ticket to get your questions answered. When I had mine done, the shop was like going back in time, very old school quality and experience, older owner. It was a good experience.

You can fit a 130a grand Cherokee or Durango (depending on your year) alternator. It requires a small amount of grinding on the mount but it's very straight forward. FWIW.

Yes it was plug and play, the housing was a little bigger but still cleared everything by at least an 1/8" so no grinding needed. I upgraded for an electric fan, only side effect was it would still charge the battery when the fan came on. The old 90amp would fall on it's face when the fan kicked on at night when I had the headlights on. Yes it was a grand cherokee 6cyl but the alternator I got was not listed for my jeep either. That same part number came up as both 117 and 120 amp depending on the source.

Anytime you upgrade the amperage of the alt you also have to upgrade the wiring also, like with a kit from kellyswipe.com a member here. I used his kit with my new amp and his is a top quality kit as far as quality and assembly go. This is a must have item as the stock setup was marginal even with the small alt.
