It could be referring to your Neutral Safety Switch. Maybe you could just clean off the electrical connection with some contact spray to get a better connection.

thats true ill try that tomorrow i was told that if i could start my car in drive then that means it is the neutral safety switch which i did and it started in drive but i was thinking since the starter is on a switch that it would start in any gear because even wen the key isnt in the ignition the starter will still crank

You have an AW4 transmission. You can start it with the key off by the switch?

u should have a aw4 trans. on the passenger side of the transmission there will be a black square box that has a shaft that runs threwit. thats ur park/neutral switch. follow the wires from the switch and check to make sure its pluged in and the wires and plug look clean and not damaged. if everything looks good then the switch either needs to be adjusted if its posible or its just no good. when they go bad it wont let the car crank thats probably y theres a starter switch now. its cheaper to hook up a switch than to replace that part.

hope this helps u

if you can start the jeep in drive from a switch without having the ignition key in then what the guy did was bypass the ignition switch. doing this would throw the code right away, even if there technically was nothing wrong because it senses that there is no voltage passing through the switch.

if the wires melted thats y its throwing that code. u need to find out y they melted. its either to close to the exhaust or u have a short in that part of ur harness.

u need to replace the park/neutral switch and make sure u tuck the wire away from the exhaust and that should fix ur problem. that will fix the problem with the check engine light. if u want to take the switch out and be able to start it with the ignition u will need to c how the switch is ran. who ever did it could have done it one of two ways. either ran the switch to the starter or hooked it up under the colum. if u know alittle bit about the wiring in a car u should be able to figure it out pretty easy.
