Default need an engine.

Ok here is the question.....88 xj, engine has excessive blow by, 230k miles. Are all 4.0 created equally, that is will a 4.0 from any grand Cherokee bolt into my 88??? There seems to be more engines in those with lower miles than in the xj series jeeps, at least in my area. Tried to do a search and came up empty. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Kevin

Kevin the basic block and internals are the same as long as you get one that retains the distributor. You will need your 88 intake and exhaust components plus your distributor but everything else can be from the new engine. Oh yeah you will need your 88 flexplate and CPS because the signals changed through the years.

Another thing that is different is the head and where some sensors go on the the head itself.

thanks guys, will be looking for a decent motor next week. the blow by is so bad it will push oil out through the crankcase vent and out the bottom of the air cleaner. makes a huge mess. well the i only paid 700 for the jeep in the 1st place, you get what you pay for. still worth putting a motor in it!!!!

You can retain your Renix head and just have it rebuilt along with a valve job. That will make a swap a whole lot more simple.

this may be the time to upgrade to a later computer system aswell. is there a thread on this? an is there any wiring diagrams i can look at? if i am going to put a motor in it i might as well make it more user friendly!! i dont care for the renix system at all! i have a 66 charger i put an LT1 computer system and fuel injection on the original poly 318. so this should be a piece of cake. incodently that is where my namecomes from SEFI- sequential electronic fuel injected, POLY-polyspherical (head). those that know mopars will remember the poly, the wide block, or semi-hemi as they were called. they were built for about 9 years the last being 1966.

here are pics of the charger.

what years would be best to use?
