Mystery hole in console

Mystery hole in console
I'm trying to get the 4wd dash indicator lights working on my 88 xj limited 4.0lt. auto trans. I have removed the dash and replaced all the bulbs, but can only get full time 4wd (green ) light to turn on. while looking for the problem, I came across a mystery square hole to the left of the emergency brake in the console all taped up by previous owner. there is a multi wire connector laying loose inside. is this part of the shift indication circuit or something else?

its for power mirrors but there is probably a reason its not there and all taped up. do you have electric locks and windows ? if not and it has manual mirrors now maybe the doors were switched out or possibly just the switch broke and they took it out and taped them to be safe?
