Yes it is a GM engine and I had one in my '86 Comanche, now back on topic...
I'm kinda curious to see a pic of this switch. You have the auto trans in yours or stick?

It sounds like an aftermarket switch, a pic would definitely help once you get the chance. Does it look like the switch is formed into the bezel like it belongs there or does it look like someone found a convenient spot for a switch there?
