Today I went to leave and my jeep just wouldn't start, it did the same thing yesterday and I took out the battery and put it back in and it started, but today it was different I did the same thing and it just would budge at all, all my dash lights and radio comes on, I just put in a new battery about 6 months ago (dura last gold) so I don't think it's the battery, when I try an turn it over it clicks once then nothing..I have no idea what it could be, also recently when I put it in reverse and don't give it a good amount of gas it completely stalls and shuts off but starts right up, I don't know if that is part of why it isn't starting or what! I need the jeep worlds help on this one before I decide what to do, it's a 1998 xj

1) for starters (...) what does your battery voltage show (with a DVOM, not your gauge)
2) are we talking about auto or manual? Different issues (like NSS) with different models...

So today, I went out about to start taking apart my jeep to figure out what's wrong. It didn't start the first time I tried but then I put it in neutral and back into park and it started right up with no hesitation, I'm so confused on what's going on with it

Sounds like your Neutral Safety Switch on the Transmission. Next time wiggle the shift **** in park while you try and start it and if that does not work, do the same in Neutral. If it starts, the NSS is dirty. I still start mine by wiggling the shifter.
It can be replaced or taken off and cleaned.

Have you measured voltage by now?
Post 7 and 9 already refer to what you been doing now in post 12.
if your battery checks out with good voltage, my guess is your NSS, since it doesn't crank but 'clicks' when tried to start and shifter manipulation does seem to make it able to start...
