My good friend is selling me his 01 XJ for cheap, should I jump on it??
Hey guys,
So my friend’s sister in law just bought a new car and she’s willing to sell me her 01 XJ 220k miles for $1000. My friend has worked on it and said pretty much everything has been replaced except for the drivetrain.
I currently drive an RSX in Baltimore and it simply can’t handle the roads anymore. I plan on getting ~8k for it…so I’ll definitely have some money to spend on fixing up the jeep. I don’t drive that often…maybe a few times during the week, but I’m not sure of how much I’ll be driving once I graduate and leave the city. I need the car to last me at least 2 years. If you were me, would you dump the RSX and holler at the XJ?

If you have basic hand tools, a jack, and a place to work a XJ will last as long as you need it to. At 220K miles I would definitely check to make sure it's not 0331 head casting as those are prone to crack. Other than that, that's a screaming deal that I would jump on. Where I'm from that's a 4K XJ all day.

1. It needs to be a 4.0, 4 X 4.
2. Keep a couple of thousand around to fix the head when it cracks. They all had the 0331 head, which has a casting flaw between #3 and #4 valve sets.
3. Make sure it's not rusty.
