Default My gas guage reads backwards

I recently bought an 91 cherokee, and ran out of gas going home when the gas guage said full. Empty indication means the tank is full, and full means the tank is empty. Plus, there is only one wire on the float thingy in the tank. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with a gauge in one of my cars. And it was a surge in the electrical that did it.

A dangerous sounding way that might fix it is to take off the gauge covers and dash till the gauges are exposed, and turn the key on. when all the gauges move to their spot try pushing the gas needle past the empty mark. Do force it too hard. If this will work then the gauge should just snap completely around and return to the present fuel level.

Since it is a newer model (90's +) I am assuming that it is fuel injected and all/most gauges are electrical.

Let me know!

I have a 91 and mine reads backwards also. its weird when you fill it up and your gas light comes on. I belive i have an 88 pump and sending unit in my tank. So the other day I pulled it out and was playing with the unit and sure enough when I put my float the where it should read full it read empty and when I put it to empty it read full. So I hooked up my 91 sending unit and it read how it should. I belive it have to do with it reading ohms. Now i have the problem of trying to switch out the 2 sending units but only the 91 is bolted on the the 88 its riveted on and is set up a little different. So I would say pull your pump out and look at it and see if you can play with the float or switch it to the correct one. Just be carefull.

It's how the guage is set to read the ohm's from the sender, they can differ by year.

you could just leave it be and remember to read it backward.

its electrical so it has polarity, so you should be able to track down two wires or connections and swap them to reverse the polarity.

And yes, mess with your buddies heads while wheeling once. but get it on video and share with the rest of us.

I havent looked at the guage but the sending unit only has one wire other than the ground. Is there 2 wires behind the guage you can switch?

The guage is looking for resitance on the pos from the sender, what your sugesting it to have the resistance on the ground which will not end well.
