well my friend has a 2000 4.0 liter v6 jeep cherokee 4x4. He made a deal with me if I can fix his jeep then he will give me a ride anytime anywhere. The problem is when ever he turns on the 474 it runs fine and goes through mud. But when he turns it makes this grinding noice like it's rubbing or something. Plz help me out need to save gas money haha thanks!

4.0 is not a V6. It is a straight 6.
As for the rubbing sound I am not sure. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

 

no it's a 4.0 we replaced the engine with a v6.

 

if it only grinds in 4x4 then theres probably something wrong in the front diff.....hows the fluid

 

Is the Cherokee lifted? What size rims & tires? It could be about a hundred different things. I suggest you start by buying a Clymer repair manual for the year model range of your friend's Cherokee and get it up on jack stands and start looking for damage. (Obviously, the jack stands must be sitting on level concrete, and the vehicle supported on appropriate strength jack stands. NEVER go under a vehicle thar is not safely and correctly supported on jack stands. NEVER let any part of your body go under a vehicle supported solely on a mechanical or hydraulic jack. If it is an emergency repair in the boondocks, throw spare tires or something under the part of the truck lifted up on jack stands, so that if (God forbid) it comes off the jack it will not crush you outright. When I was a boy, a neighbor man was killed when his car fell off the bumper jack while he was under it working on the car. He had one wheel off and was doing some mechanical work. The falling car crushed him.

If there are larger-than-stock tires/wheels on it, that could be the source of the rubbing noise when he turns it.. You could have a bad bearing in the front axle, or damage/wear to the front differential somewhere. In order to even guess at the problem, we need more information.

its was actually the fluid in the transfer case he took it to a shop and they replaced the fluid and all. they use this special pump to get it out of the jeep.

 

Why would they need any kind of pump to get ATF out of the T/C when all they need to do is unscrew the drain plug?

Something odd there. I think your friend needs to buy a repair manual and start at page 1 and read the whole thing. Then he needs to buy some tools and start maintaining his Cherokee. There are some automotive maintenance things that are difficult to do, but changing the ATF in the transfer case isn't one of them.
