Default My 4WD is STUCK...

Rained hard yesterday, and I had to help pull someone out of the mud with my JEEP....Got out the tow straps, dropped the transfer case to 4H, and life was good. JEEP even got some Mud on her flaps, so I think she was happy!

Then, this morning, I drove to work...26 HIGHWAY miles! not realizing I was still in 4H! I must have broken the cable/lever without realizing it.

Now I am 26 miles from home...without any tools! And, apparently missing a few brain cells!!

Any suggestions on what to do?? Roads were still slick this morning, so I don`t think I did any damage, but I am not sure what to do now!

I have never actually pulled the console apart...and, as mentioned, I have no tools! While I am tempted to drive home on the grass median instead of the pavement, I don`t think that will work... Any and all advice is appreciated!

THANKS!

What year is the Jeep? What transfer case do you have?

What exactly is it doing? Is the shifter flopping around like it's not connected to anything? Climb under the Jeep and look at the shifter linkage. You should be able to shift it by hand if the linkage is not connected.

If it still feels like it's connected to something jiggle it around and try backing up. Pull it up into 4H then slam it back down into 2H. Back up some more. Test it by driving in a tight circle.

I'd say that your shifter is out of adjustment.

Worst case scenario, pull the linkage loose and shift it into 2H by hand.

Buy a small socket set to keep in the Jeep.

2000 Cherokee.

Stock transfer case. Shifter is marked 2H, 4H, 4L.

Yeah...the shifter just flops around...it is definitely not connected to anything. I believe I am stuck in 4H.

Thanks again!

I drove my Tundra in 4 Hi for a similar distance on pavement. It was acting funny, no power, unusual noises, then I saw the 4 Hi light. Pulled over, backed up a few feet, hit the 4WD button and back to 2WD. No apparent harm based on the subsequent 4WD events.

While not recommended, they'll live through the mistake.

Ok, you have an NP231. Climb under there and flip the lever as far towards the back of the Jeep as possible. That should be 2HI.

Wait, maybe it's forward. Either way. Click it one position and try it. You'll either be in neutral or 2HI. I can't remember.

Tada

Put your tranny in neutral and apply the parking brake before doing this. Mash up the little lever until you get to 2H. Should be one clunk.

Yes, lever forward is 2 HI.
If the TC is truly stuck a 5/16" wrench would remove the front drive-shaft and he could be on the way. But, no tools.

Thanks...second post with the picture helps out! (First one did not load for me either.)

Salad: You said tranny in Neutral...but I think I will just shift it with the engine OFF (Parking pawl engaged). Any problem with that??

You just want the transmission in neutral to relieve any stress put on the driveline. it'd make the t-case much easier to shift by hand.

Parking brake is just so it doesn't roll away while you're under it.

yeah, they really don't like being shifted while in park.
best way is with the tranny in neutral.

but i've driven my 231 equipped tj on the highway for 30 miles while in 4hi. that was 6 years ago. still works perfectly fine.
my dash light doesn't work on any of my jeeps.

It will shift from 2hi to 4hi and back in park easily. Its 4low when you want it in neutral.
