your water pump blades are probably gone but normally that takes out the bearing allowing fluid to flow out the weep hole.

Right that's why I kept thinking that the water pump is still good.

Good luck. I am finishing one up today myself, luckily the water pump is a pretty easy job and cheap to do.

If the water pump doesnt work (which I hope it does) get an external gauge to check your temp.

I did it all from the radiator cap, flush, pump etc... But my guage was bad.

Also a 96' Hope you figure it out though!

Well I changed my water pump last week it seems to have made a difference but I haven't quite taken it out on a trail since my plates expired last month i dont drive it, and I still need tires for it to pass safety and emissions so it might be couple more weeks before I can actually test it!

Check you radiator hoses, I had a pin hole leak(Count even tell it had a hole in it) and that was causing it to overheat after 5 mins. Replaced it and I was fine, hoses with holes in them won't be able to suction.

like into this
i have a 96 also,, look into this.. the 96 is an oddball for the cherokee and is not" A" tipical. Check to see if your a/c is charged.. if your a/c is not charged then the high presure switch will not allow your elec fan to assist when it is needed. Find the high presure switch ,, unplug it, jump it with a paper clip. If the fan kicks on then this could be one of your problem. Charge or recharge ... This worked in my case. Work in a bodyshop and was an easy but a hair pulling fix for me..
