OK guys what spares would you say are a must have in stock?

What should you carry on the XJ

What should you have at home, regularly replaced?

We have started using the XJ as a daily driver so wonder what are the usual things to give up/need replacing regularly other than oil & filter that is!

Is this in respect do a DD or for trail riding also?

DD; Extra belt, hoses, maybe a plug wire set, a gallon of coolant and oil. Jumper cables, although thats more of a tool than a part.

If you are offroading you may wanna pick up an extra axle or two. An extra spare is nice to have.

I'm sure there is plenty of other items I'm forgetting.

For a daily street driver-I'm not sure there is anything that fails frequently enough to have the expense of a spare part sitting around. I suppose you already have a spare tire Other wise, if you change all of your fluids as recommended, everything goes a very long time. My shocks were toast at 74,000 miles and I know the front brake pads were change before that. You may need a battery at some point. Mostly, just normal maintenance stuff.

Only DD as Off roading in the UK is very difficult to do unless you go to an organised event/course.

Spare Tire,
Plug Kit (to fix minor tire punctures)
Extra oil/Antifreeze,
Fan Belt,
Duct tape,
flashlight,
minor tool kit, with enough tools to pull a drive line or change belts hoses, and pull plugs.
WD40.
Forgot to add.
Spare CPS, Crank Position Sensor.

I'd use PB Blaster. Works better, same cost.

You don't use WD40 for lubricating anything.
The WD stands for Water Dispersant.
you using it dry out of the distributor plugs etc if you get soaked.
Next time you need something like PB, try 50%acetone/50% ATF, much better.

Thats a hard one to answer, as most of us can just run down the street whenever we need an xj part. I really don know how to reply. I could think of many things if I were heading on a jurney and needed to supply my own parts. But as far as critical spares for a dd, make sure to put gas in it.
Edit: perhap you should be asking what wear and tear items are common on an xj.

Yes you are right, in the UK any spares take at least 2 days to get to me as only 3 places stock them!

I have a new serpentine belt on the car and carry the old one in the boot as a back up.

I had a Triumph Stag before the XJ and carried certian items as they may cause a problem, PAS belt,Alternator Belt, Vicous coupling, plugs & leads, fuel pump etc.

I see loads of you have done massive mileages so would like to think my 50K engine will last me a long time if service correctly.

For daily driving, I carry the factory jack and lug wrench, the mini spare, my AAA card and cell phone.

I've got a nice CB radio...but can't figure out where to mount the thing so its sitting on the floor in the cargo area...waiting.

For breaking loose bolts and such, just about anything is better than WD40.

I completely dropped the ball on this, though. Good call on that one.

But I can buy a spray can of blaster for like $2. No mixing required. To each his own, though. Never had a problem with blaster.
