Default Musical Radiators

I don't know if this is going to work or not, but here is my plan...

Part 1: My '99 Cherokee has a good standard radiator (P/N 52079682AE). I would like to replace it with the HD radiator (P/N 52079693AD), assuming it's a drop-in replacement. I also want to add an external trans cooler while I'm at it.

Part 2: My '95 Cherokee needs a new radiator. I would like to take the original radiator from my '99 and put it in the '95, assuming it will fit.

Both Cherokees have the 4.0 and factory A/C, although I'm removing the A/C components from the '95. The '95 is also missing the fan shroud and the whole electric fan assembly.

Well, if there's no huge differences between the two years' radiators, then I would assume they'd work since it's the same engine and both have/had factory A/C. Probably best thing to do would be compare them when you have them out, or just look online for a picture of each year.

EDIT: According to Rockauto, both years use the same part number radiators. Just had a look and they do.

If I'm understanding the FSM correctly, XJs that left the factory with standard cooling had no A/C (rare). They were built with the mechanical/belt driven fan only. U absolutely positively need the shroud on the belt driven fan along with a good properly functioning fan clutch.

Thanks for the info. I was actually wondering what the fan setup on the non-AC 4.0s was. All the info I have is for the AC version. My '95 "Jeep Book" says the electric fan was included with AC. Because of the rarity, it maybe easier to just get the fan shroud/electric fan and set it up the way it came.

Non-a/c XJs (again, rare) came with the efan IF factory heavy duty cooling was optioned. So, efan was standard with a/c option or with HD cooling option. Standard cooling (no a/c)....no efan.

Further to this, djb you might remember a thread from previous (you me and CCKen were trying to sort this I think) where we tried to figure out what the differences were between the HD and Standard radiator part numbers as listed in the official parts books. We couldn't find any.

Interesting...

So did the single-fan 4.0s use the same fan mounted off-center on the idler pully or did they use a larger fan centered on the water pump?

I went by O'Riley today and got a quote on their inexpensive replaement radiator. I'll keep that in mind as an option for the '95 if I end up not swapping the radiator on the '99.

I've forgotten that discussion . Were both HD and standard listed for LHD?....or was HD listed for RHD (postal)?

Hmm seems I didn't actually do anything in that thread. I remember looking up the same P/Ns in my parts books and Googling around though.

In that Chrysler parts list, wonder what the diff is cool max and max cool and how does one distinguish between part numbers with or without a/c. Seems like the aftermarket lists the rads as LHD and RHD (postal). Maybe the postal RHD is HD?

I might pass on the rad for the 99 for the time being, and just get the replacement for the 95. The one already in there is reasonably well maintained, doesn't leak (knock on wood) and has never let it get over 210. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Will still be adding the trans cooler though. I gave my trans a good cooking last fall pulling a trailer over a mountain.
