Computer codes
Check that link out. See if you have any trouble codes stored.
If you have an electronic issue, you will have a code stored.
I don't have a dog in this fight. I just hate to see anyone taken advantage of. And if someone is charging you hourly rates to nit-pick your Jeep you're getting the treatment. JMO.

This is my list and price for what I feel appropriate.
175.00 cap, rotor, coil, wire kit
260.00 starter
143.50 flywheel
--------------
578.50
sound about right?
With labor I am sure its gonna be right around 8 big ones... -_-
btw i feel for the "regretful decision guy" although, its a Jeep thing - I guess he didn't understand. I learned. The REAL hard way!

The reason I asked is because people need to fill in their profile as it makes it easier to answer questions when we know what we're talking about. And someone might want to help him fix his Jeep if they live nearby.

I was referring to what was being discussed earlier about certain mechanics and their troubleshooting "skills".
Its a new one on me that '96 Jeeps have points and condensers.

$260 for a starter!!!!! I paid less than $80 for mine from Auto Zone! Installed it myself and it was a piece of cake.
Just to give you a feel for how much you are paying I paid for a new alternator, exhaust manifold, freeze plugs, oil, filter, 3 tires, and it did not cost more than $700-$800 for parts. Labor was free because me, my dad and uncle installed them all. My dad drives that jeep (1996 cherokee 4.0). So ibought my own for $1000 (1990 Cherokee 4.0). That was working for $7.00 an hour.

this guy has no idea what he is doing.
any bonehead can throw parts at it till the cows come home.
99.9% chance it's electrical, yet he's throwing mechanical parts at it.
everything he's thrown at it would fix a rough running engine, or an odd starting issue... not a fail on the side of the road issue (except coil, but, why keep a new coil on it if that did nothing to fix the issue?)
why has he not checked codes?
Does the fuel pump prime?
I'd pay him for the parts (his cost, demand invoices) not a stitch of labour, and get it the heck out of there.
He is NOT diagnosing, he is throwing parts at it.

yikes, sorry - the parts prices listed are "performance" parts. I figure if I am gonna have the mechanic replacing stuff it might as well be ready for down the road when its. Perhaps I am eager to get this project started rather than putting the basics on it and being happy. This right now is a question on....spend money on basics, get her home then spend MORE money on what I want..... OR waiting alittle longer and getting what i want the first time thru and have to do ANYTHING under the hood ONE time rather than 2 or 3 times.
YES codes were checked, and there are some codes - waiting to get full print out tommarow the 15th. Was end of day when I got that info on thursday and I was out of state overnight.
