Default Multifunction switch replacement pre96

Just a quick thread showing how to replace your multifunction switch on a pre96 XJ. Most of the time symptoms of this will be fairly easily spotted. Such as:

- erratic blinkers
- no blinkers
-only low beams
-only hi beams
- wipers not working

And the list goes on. I just so happened to burn the switch out by installing headlights without a harness upgrade and it fried it. I bought the switch from autozone for $60 out the door with a lifetime warranty.

Step 1: remove three screws on bottom side of steering column cover. Pull bottom cover off, once the bottom is off the top will simply lift off.

Step 2: unscrew the two security torx bit screws in the side of the unit. (See picture 1&2)

Step 3: unscrew bolt on back side of the harness for the wiring and the wiring will simply pull out.

Step 4: simply do everything backwards of the above three steps.

It's overall a very easy project that takes at the most about a half hour with the right tools.

Good write up.

I believe they started using that switch in 91.

I know my 89 has a saginaw column. The wiper, blinker and high-low switches are all separately replaceable.

my 94 is completely defferent no hazard button on top and the column doesn't come apart like yours. I need one but cant find it no where my windshield washer will not work but the pump will work if hook it to power.

are your headlights and blinkers working correctly? Is everything on the one switch?

if it's only the washer function, check for a short somewhere in the system! Pull up a wiring diagram online!

I'm going to guess bad connection in the button when it's pressed

The button is the lever that turns inside the switch when pushed that part is working I can see it turn what I need to know is where to find a new switch as I can't see that the switch comes apart for service. from what I have found online my column is like the late 80's early ninety's but all the switch I have found are for tilt with intermit wipers or no tilt without intermit wipers mine has no tilt but it has intermit wipers. I wonder if the switch for tilt with intermit wipers would work in mine?
