Muffler repair question...

So, I have an 88 Loredo, and the PO, as wonderful as they are, ran straignt pipe straight back. I replaced it with a flexpipe, Catalytic converter, and muffler, then to tail pipe. The problem I am having is when I welded this all together and put it all on, the tail pipe and muffler pipe were the same size, so I got a little coupling that was bigger to weld the two together. Now I have a gap that I am leaking, and the gap is pretty large, and I could probably just fill it with weld, but would it be safe to maybe hammer this gap down so that it is touching, and that way don't have to deal with filling the gap? Also, I through some exhaust crack and joint sealer in for ****s and giggles, to see if it would work. After a while, turned the jeep on, and not so much. didn't work. lol.

Can you cut it long-ways, make a slit, overlap the flaps, hold that tight with a clamp, then weld/braze that?

Btw, I tried that flex pipe, (in the 70's). It fill break instead if flexing as soon at it rusts, so make it secure caus it won't be bendy long! (maybe you have a better product?)

I have it all hung up, properly, and am trying the slit thing as well, well, tomorrow. I will post if I have any luck... This is pretty much the last thing I need to do to officially get inspected... Works out good since my LCAs are being delivered in the AM, so I can put them on to .

Guess a carpenter needs to be smarter than wood. You have the saw and the torch, show it who's boss! Good luck.

LOL.
Yeah, I am new to weldings and such, so I don't know shortcuts. But I can say, I have learned a lot from working on this jeep. haha

Prep, Prep, Prep. The angle grinder is your friend. Bare metal. Plain old Boraxo works as brazing flux btw.
On that grinder; While I was at the orthopedic surgeon's (having him figure out how to bill be silly for failing to put my hand back together right), there was I guy in there who figured out how to get things to go REALLY wrong with an angle grinder. That little thing deserves plenty of respect.

obviously it's too late but next time, mock up your system before welding anything, then if pipe needs to be expanded you can buy fittings or take it to a muffler shop and ask them to expand it for you. I work at a Midas, I do that for guys all the time. If I know it's going on a Jeep I do it for free.

Yeah, I was going to weld this all into the sttraightpipe the PO ran, and it was all good.... and I had the flex pipe, Cat and muffler welded together... then I went to cut out that length fron the straight pipe... When I cut through one side, and near the other, started wiggling it, it turned out the guy only welded the one side, and the other was just "held in place." Made my preplanning into a worthless Idea... lol
