My muffler and entire exhaust system is stock from 1992. The muffler has some visible holes in it. And the U brackets that hold it on are rusted. Im thinking about ordering this part

Is this a good muffer? Is this all I need or should I replace the tailpipe also? Is this a job I can do myself or should I not even try prying that old rusted thing apart?

 

Pretty sure that is a Quiet Flow one. I bought the same version for my '00. But it is a different part number cause an '00 exhaust is set up a little different then a '92
Which means it has a lifetime warranty. At least mine through Napa did.

Separating the muffler from your tail pipe and the catalytic converter could prove challenging.
What kind of shape is the tail pipe and cat in?
I'm one of those screw it an replace everything types so I would probably replace both the cat and tail pipe.
Figure I am there, do it, and with a little luck never have to go back in there again.
But that would also mean dealing with the O2 sensor that I am guessing you have in the cat too.
One thing for sure. You can do better on the price of that muffler. With shipping and tax about $73 to me from RockAuto.
About $70 from Amazon with tax. About $68 with tax if you can use one of their 25% off coupons.

 

Thanks for that. Actually now that you mention it I probably should replace all those things. The tail pipe is like chipping rust at the end, and the cat looks like it will develop some holes in the near future. Is there a kit that you recommend that comes with all those things? As well as the hanging brackets and all required hardware

Tells you everything you need for your exhaust. Except the exhaust manifold which hopefully you don't have to mess with.

Now here is the rub. I am noticing that you are in CA. So guessing you need a CARB cat.
Which I believe to not be the part number listed in the diagram you are going to pull up at the first link.
So look that up too.
Which unfortunately is going to increase the price of the cat.
Also you can substitute the Walker SoundFX for the Quiet Flow.
Cheaper but pretty sure it does not come with a lifetime warranty.
So once you determine all the part numbers you can shop around for the best price.
One thing I am not familiar with is the O2 sensors on a '92 with CA Emissions which I am guessing you own.
Assuming there is an O2 sensor in the cat. Getting that out to put in the new cat could end up not being fun.
Depending on the age of the O2 sensors there is a chance you might want to replace those too.
With my '00 you use NGK O2 sensors. That is all. Don't know how critical the brand is with a '92 but guessing you should do the same.

Depending on the circumstances I agree. But if he replaces the cat, muffler, and tail pipe that should be pretty easy.
Best I can tell on a '92 the front of the cat bolts to the down/intermediate pipe.
I am assuming there is an O2 sensor in the cat. Frankly just to not have to possibly fight with getting an old one out I am buying a new one.
Probably should be replaced anyway. LOL.

 

You know? As bad as we have it here in NY, we still don't use a tailpipe sniffer and any vehicle 95 or older doesn't get emissions tested! As long as your exhaust system has no leaks, it passes. You could ever run with a carburetor if you want to! All cars sold new in NY since 96 have to be CA emissions equipped though. My 00 XJ doesn't have a downstream converter and is fitted with a Flowmaster 50 and passes every year.

 

I'm with you. Coincidentally my '89 is going in to the shop for a new exhaust system on Monday. I have plenty of other more enjoyable projects on the go and I'm happy to support the local garage that has finally been allowed to reopen.

 

My mechanic makes lots of money with a tube bender, a sawsall, and a MIG welder! He has guys coming to him all the time for custom exhaust work.

 

Exhaust replacement is straight forward. Unbolt or cut off the old one and bolt up the new one. I prefer band clamps so I can adjust things and easy to remove if something needs to be replaced. My great sounding Thrush welded muffler and tailpipe cost me $77 shipped.

 

Ditto on using https://www.walkerexhaust.com/find-my-part.html to get the part numbers. I replaced everything on my Comanche from the exhaust header back for $180 from Amazon. Everything was a straight bolt-on with all the right hangers. I think it was the gasket at the cat that I ended up with an extra, because the cat actually included a new one depsite Walker saying it didn't. The hanger at the cat, I had to hammer the studs out and use new bolts.

I also used the Walker 33975 band clamps which make install and adjustments real easy, instead of the small clamps that crimp the pipe.

 

Will those give better mpg?

 

In my opinion the only way to substantially improve mpg in a jeep is buy a 2wd one! The rolling resistance of the front axle and weight of the t/case suck fuel at an astonishing rate in a 4wd. Jeeps are never good on fuel usage and never were designed to be. In contrast, my 89 Chevy 350 TBI 4wd pickup got 8 mpg city and 11 highway! That's why it had dual 16 gallon tanks. The best mpg I ever got in my 2000 WJ 4.0 was 27 on a two way run from Syracuse to Rochester and return the same day, totally flat terrain and light wind. That's the one and only time that ever happened. Usually my average overall is 16 mpg.

 

I just did this a couple days ago, and as I just got done telling Dave in a pm, I got the Walker Quiet Flow. Stainless steel for one thing, so maybe it won't rust like the $40 walker, though that remains to be seen up here in Syracuse, and a few pounds heavier than the cheap $40 walker which I just went through 2 of.
Performs great, just love it. Quieter means you don’t have to be afraid to accelerate, and at the same time it flows great so you don't loose performance by bottling up the exhaust. Just a cool rap out the end of the tailpipe, and no drone under the car. I just love it. With the online 25% discount it set me back $75, but they also refunded me 40 on the old one with the 1 year warranty. Oh they couldn’t find the record that I bought it, but I then came across the actual receipt for Oct 19.
I highly recommend the walker quiet flow.
Best part was reusing my converter, which a 2 1/4 end had rusted off on the intake side. Didnt have the $300 or what ever the ridiculous price is. I got a connector from advanced, ans was able to slide it in and tack weld it good as new, ...nothing wrong with it other than that.
Spend the money on a good muffler, this is not a place to go cheap it will come back and bite you.

 

My choice was a Flowmaster 50. A lot quieter than the 40, but still makes a nice tone that's not offensive. Heavy gauge metal with no packing, just baffles. The closest to that V8 sound you're going to get out of a 6. It does need an extension pipe added between the cat and tailpipe however.

Word of caution. Not all stainless is non-rusting. IIRC, only 303 stainless won't rust ever unless immersed in salt water continuously. The stuff used for sinks and table flatware will. If it's magnetic, it will rust for sure. Don't EVER screw a stainless bolt into aluminum! It makes the best locktite you're ever going to see.
