Ok i'm trying to go after a misfire at idle. I have champion plugs, Taylor 8.2mm wires, new cap and rotor. I want to replace my coil with an msd 8228. do I have to also get the adapter for it, I know accel makes one but not sure if it will fit my 99 4.0. Any ideas?

 

read a few reviews on that coil before you buy, i almost did when i wanted one. Made in china and failure rate is very high

 

Best to use an original stock coil from the dealer. They LAST!

Your question - no, you don't need an adater if you use a stock coil.

or are you asking about a misfire? describe it!

 

I just want to know if any one is using msd ignition coil 8228. And if it is a direct bolt in our do I need an adapter like the accel one? I have a misfire that isn't throwing a check engine light but it's only at idle with no power lose through the power band

 

From Joe Peters and well stated. Sounds harsh but just makes sense:
"Let’s play a game.

You pretend that you are the only one that knows what year/engine/model, etc that you are asking about.

We will all pretend you never asked a question until you provide at least the bare minimum of information about your vehicle".

 

What were telling you is to not buy that coil and just get an OEM one, when you post a "cranks but wont start" thread in a month or two you will know what the problem is

 

He has a misfire - he thnks an MSD coil will fix it.

Let him find out the hard way.

He can CALL MSD they can tell you if it needs an adapter. DUH!

 

Generally if a coil is going out you will develop a miss in the high rpms but like you said, if he thinks a cheap china coil will fix it, then i guess the lesson has to be learned some how

 

I think a better way to post this to get better answers would be "My jeep has developed a miss at idle, i have new wires, cap and rotor. Could somebody please help me in diagnosing my problem". Then a common answer would be something like "did you replace the spark plugs as well as set the gap properly?"

Well I read a bunch of reviews and people seem to have a lot of problems with the accel coil but seem to love the msd one. So I figured id upgrade my old coil with the msd one. I just wanted to know if any one was running it and if it was a direct bolt in for a 99 4.0. No need to jump at my neck guys

 

I have an MSD coil in the garage along with a set of plug wires. I went to install them a few weeks back and noticed the elec plug to the coil was different than what was on my older 94 XJ. The 98 ZJ has a new plug... and needs the Accel adapter..

I think thats what you were trying to figure. If your XJ has the newer style plugs with the red locking tab then yes, i believe you'd need to use the accel adaptive harness.

I didnt google the part# to see if it's a direct connection...
