Default Moving rotor

Big problem here, so this has happend 3 times now. My rotor keeps moving and throws my spark off timing. I'm not sure if it should move as easy as it does. I'm not sure what could be the cause of this. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it gets 20 degrees off sometimes it's 180. It will usually run for a week or two before it will get off. Any suggestions on to the cause

Are you pushing it down all the way until the tang engages the plate in the distributor?

Tried and/or compared a new rotor?

Wobble in the distributor shaft?

are you aware that the distributor cap and rotor are maintenance items and are due for replacement every 30,000 miles?

I replaced both cap and rotor about 3,000 miles ago. The rotor is fully engaged to the plate the plate spins as well as the rotor. Shaft is solid. It's not specifically the rotor the entire shift rotates but the distributer itself doesn't move. Just the innards.

Pin holding the distributor gear to the shaft broken?

How are you addressing this when it happens?

I fix it by setting the motor to top dead center then turning the rotor untill it's at plug number one the fine tune a tad. What's the pin your talking about. I've never seen a pin (then again I've never looked for one.)

This might help.

Distributor needs to be removed.

pull the rotor off and make sure it is still keyed. it is just a piece of plastic so it could have broken.

If you are able to turn the rotor when the distributer is installed that is bad. Keep looking until you find where it is moving.

Pete, could his oil pump drive gears be fine, but due to lack of lube, the "key" that fits down there is on it's last legs?

Cjjc, have you pulled it out and looked at it...just a thought...

I am not having this issue. I was only offering some advise.

But since you asked I have pulled my distrubitor and looked at it. Last time was when I re-built the engine.
