My 1993 Jeep Cherokee runs hot. 6 cylinder 4-liter engine. Some posts here suggested replacing the radiator cap and a couple mentioned Stant caps.

I ordered a Stant cap on Amazon and received a Motorad cap in a Stant Box. After I received it, I checked the item again on Amazon​​​​​​ and even though the Brand say Stant if you look closely at the picture you can see '... RAD' above the '13'. Amazon gave me a refund and no return was necessary.


Here is another Stant radiator cap on Amazon, and looking at the photo you can see 'MOT...' below the '16'. The take-away here is don't buy Stant radiator caps on Amazon. I did notify Amazon about this dishonest vendor.

Oh, changing the cap (and the radiator overflow hose) didn't fix my running hot problem.

 

The question begs to be asked - What does 'Run Hot" mean ? ..There are a couple of 'Experts' (I say experts sincerly, not as a wise crack) on this forum that have answered this question.... & the answers are always the same, Radiator, thermostat, fan relay...ect.....I've owned 9-10 XJ's & they all ran 'Hot" on the fringe of overheating, but tempered down when the electric fan kicked in....I'll be the first to admit on a hot summer day the eye focus is always on the temperature gauge.& the anxiety sets in...However I owned 2 that had idiot lights & an engine that was running hot, was never a concern as the temperature light never came on....So if your radiator is clean, the fan sensor is working, the shroud in in place, I would just get used to the fact that XJ's plain & simple run hot.....I never experienced an overheating experience unless there was a major malfunction..........It was told to me that emissions played a big part in high engine temperatures..........

 

MotoRad acquired Stant about 3 years ago. Most of their products are made in North Carolina, Israel, or Mexico.

You dinged a seller who did nothing wrong and got the part for free.

 

True, I bought a stant one about 3 years ago and notice it had MotoRad in it and googled it and found out same thing that Stant is owned by them.

 

Just get the factory stat.

 

Since Stant is motorad, you should pay the seller or send the cap back, else you are the dishonest one. So do the right thing and return the item, or pay for it, else you are the dishonest one.

 

Amazon sells both Motorad and Stant radiator caps. Stant caps are about 30% more expensive than Motorad, so I assume that they're either a better product or made in USA or Mexico. I am not being dishonest. I didn't get what I paid for. If I wanted a Motorad cap I would have bought one.

 

The amazon page shows that the cap you bought is chinese. Says so on the Amazon site. So why you say you expected mexican or american made cap?

Read the "technical details" for the stant cap on Amazon, it says country of origin is china. Is that not what you ordered, a chinese cap?

 

Anything that says Stant is old product or packaging still being used up 3 years after the acquisition. Aside from one plant that shutdown, Motorad is making the caps in the same plants that used to make the Stant caps. There is no difference in quality.

So moving past that, what's your overheating issue? If you still have the original 1993 radiator, that would be suspect at this point. Fan clutch good? Fan shroud still in place?

 

So far my radiator cap, radiator, thermostat, steering stabilizer and fan clutch have all failed that I bought on Amazon, I believe counterfeit but can't prove it. NEVER again will I buy car parts on Amazon. They refunded the radiator, fan clutch and steering stabilizer, 2X the installation time and work. PLEASE do yourself a huge favor and buy online from Rock Auto or local like Carquest or NAPA. Hard lesson learned.

The KYB steering stabilizer poured oil all over my driveway day before yesterday, the Stant thermostat locked closed, the Stant radiator cap leaked bad, the Hayden fan clutch locked and wouldn't release and the Spectra radiator poured coolant where the core meets the sides. Garbage!!!! These all failed within weeks of each other after being installed at around the same time.

 

There are a ton of counterfeit items on Amazon, in particular batteries. The Amazon warehouse stocks items per UPC, not by vendor. Amazon sells from that common bin, and the vendors refill the bin as it's sold. So the products from both legitimate and dishonest vendors get mixed. At least Amazon is will to refund when you buy a pack of batteries and half of them are dead on arrival.

Auto parts from off-brands have been horrible quality. Some of the brands like Cardone refurbished are crap as well.

 

Whats your definition of “HOT"? Factory Thermostat is 195*F. My 1999 RHD 4.0 XJ runs just on the plus side of 100*C (212*F). My 2001 LHD 4.0 XJ runs just on the minus side of 210*F (98.88*C). My 2001 LHD 4.0 XJ used to run just on the plus side of 210*F. What I did to cool it down a little was (I’d guess 5*F);
- High flow water pump (www.hesco.us).
- High flow thermostat housing (www.hesco.us).
- 195*F thermostat with steam hole (www.hesco.us)?
- 3 row radiator.
- installed a quality radiator cap, rated at the correct 16 lbs p.s.i.
- back flushed / front flushed the heater core until it came out clean & then flushed it both ways again.
- flushed the engine block the best I could.
- 50/50 coolant mix using distilled water @ a -35*F freeze protection / 223*F boiling point.
- HPS silicone radiator & heater hoses (longevity).
- water wetter.
- made sure my mechanical & electric fans were working properly (google).
- made sure my fan shrouds & radiator flaps were in place so the air flowed through the radiator like it was designed to.
- tow package transmission cooler set up.
*****note use Mopar sensors when switching out sensors.
*****EPAuto Spill Proof Radiator Coolant Filling Funnel Kit comes in really handy for burping the air from the system.
*****I poured the coolant mix into the heater core & upper radiator hose until I had seen the tap water I was using to flush the system turn antifreeze/coolant green. I wanted as much of the tap water out of the system as much as possible.

For the 1999 RHD 4.0 XJ, I plan to do the same cooling system modifications / upgrades.
