I just pulled one last night. All I can tell you is that for me, it is much easier to pull the front clip (only a couple of bolts... give you a ton more room) and then everything (engine/tranny) than it is to just pull the motor. (dont know if you were going to do that already or not) It would also make it easier to put back together.

Also make sure to label your bolts and such (a big piece of cardboard with some holes in it and a sharpie works great).

I recomend you replace all the seals and such while you have it out and then you wont have to deal with it later. If you have the cash, throw some new mounts on it too.

Being as both are 97s, you should not have a problem there. Good luck! It took 3 of us about 5 hours to do it... What I do is disconect everything, Hoist the engine up a bit and push the jeep backwards away from the engine while somebody else holds/ guides it all. Its really not all that bad.

Loosen/remove the top 2 bell housing to engine bolts first. They are E12s.

cruiser is right, if you can just get those two top tranny bolts thats the only bugger, and while its out you might as well change your crankshaft position sensor, but dont put the new one in until after new engine is in so you dont damage the new sensor.

I just got done putting a new motor in my 94 sport. I pulled the radiator to save it from damage. I had everything put back on except the ac compressor.

Remove the air cleaner so you've got a place to throw the power steering pump. Remove the battery so you've got a place to chuck the AC compressor. Remove the radiator. It's a breeze from there.
