Default motor shut off problems

so I have a 1990 xj pioneer with the original 4.0L I6 with the automatic transmission. I just barely started driving it a few days ago after being parked for a year and a half. it was parked with under a quarter tank of fuel and with fuel stabilizer. I ran it almost out of gas then filled it up, but ever since I've started driving it, my motor just dies every now and then. it's brought on by nothing, i'll just be driving and it dies. but every time, I just put it neutral and fire it right back up and it runs fine after that usually. my average running temp is about 3/4 between 110 and 210. does anyone know what would be causing this. when I bought it long ago, I had to put a new thermostat on it, and it ran fine but after I parked it and started driving it again, it does this. could it be a temp sensor? could I have wires loose that would be causing this? could some one tell me if they've had this problem and what was causing it and how to fix it?
