Default Motor mounts for a daily driver

I can’t seem to find much info on motor mounts for a daily driver for the XJ. Most threads come up with off-road quality motor mounts that are very harsh driving, but protect the engine when it comes to lots and lots of movement and bumps.

One name I keep hearing however is brown dog motor mounts, and they seem legit with some good quality stuff, and some say they’re better for off-road than daily driving, and others say it the other way around

Aside from brown dog, what other options do I have for a good quality motor mount that rides smooth and is decently priced?

Following this thread. I've heard a lot of the cheap ones are crap, but that's about all I know.

Brown Dog Ultra Rubber Flex are great all purpose mounts. Super solid but wont rattle your teeth and interior trim loose.

I've had them for about 5 years and been 100% happy.

Mountain Off Road "Bombproof" seem the be the other brand most talk about. They both come up often due to motor mount bolt breakage on the block side bracket. Both offer bracket kits that use some of the extra holes in the block to secure the bracket. There may be others.

For a DD (like mine), I just used the auto parts store "brand". I changed mine out over 10 years ago.

I bought a cheapo stock rear mount. (Hencho en Rojo China) had to replace it within a few months, the rubber sagged so much that my transfer case was rubbing on cross bar. At first it was shimmed to stop the rubbing, but the rubber kept on sagging, so in the trash it went. then went to a urethane type.

Vatozone/ McParts store factory mounts.

Thats what I do, because........................................ Well to be honest it's a 2.5L not exactly a huge torque monster.
I have been running factory mounts since 2018, and they are just fine.

I would highly recommend for you to buy a good torch however.

Listen to Dusty, and remember one more thing, replace ALL your mounts at the same time, including trans mounts.

So do you think that I could just use some 6 dollar cheapo from RockAuto, or just bite the bullet and get the Brown Dog mounts?

The Pioneer or Anchor brands are just fine.
Like roninofako said, do the transmission one as well.
I installed new motor mounts on my janky tired ol 2.5 when I got it in 2018. They are still fine today with my new lil stroker engine.
I off road my jeep in 4Low, and I wont buy other motor mounts. Wanna guess why?

You have a two wheel drive 2.5L. that is more than likely tired.
You don't have a transfer case, and your not gonna rip them up.
There is NO need to install brown dogs. What exactly will you gain besides torching more money?

I had no broken mount bolt issues in my 97 XJ, but installed the Brown Dog engine clamp kits anyway, just cause you can see the overkill. Yep, they are some work to install, but killer bullet proof, on or off road.

You’ve got a really good point. Thank you. I know all of my mounts are due. This thing vibrates like crazy when it’s idling and the motor moves a substantial amount if I rev it.

My transmission also moves forward quite a bit if I mash the throttle. It’s just another item on my long to-do list.

One other thing to consider is that the 2.5L vibrates like crazy.

The 4.0L is no where near as bad as the 4cyl.
All these 6cyl. guys don't get it!
They all think you have a 4.0 too.

Having the extra pad on the factory mounts helps greatly in a more enjoyable ride for a daily.
Are the Browndog mounts heavy duty? Well yeah they are!
But you will loose the extra pad of rubber. Not worth it IMHO. Not to mention it will rattle more of the bolts loose in other parts of your Jeep.

When you replace the mounts on the 4cyl. it is better to take the Alternator off. Get it outta the way.
Take the air cleaner box out. It is three 13mm nuts inside.
Also have a floor jack with a big block of wood. It helps lift up your engine, and position the mount into the cradle. Use these things carefully!

Passenger side

Drivers side

To take the Alt off you need to loosen your serpentine belt.
To do this you have two 13mm bolts on the back of the power steering pump you need to loosen.
Then you also need to loosen the top bolt above the power steering pump. After that loosen the 13mm nut below the pump, and then you can loosen the pump with the belt tensioner bolt on the side.

Nut below the pump.

How long did the stock mounts last ? If they made it 10 years or more why would you want to change the type you have .

I've had Brown Dog's installed in my 90' XJ for over 15 years. Most extreme condition encountered would be hopping a curb. Have never had any problems with them, they just do what they are suppose to do. I pay no attention to them.
