Default Motor doesnt have all its power

My engine feels like it's lost it's power. If I barely hit the gas it feels like there's still torque there but getting up to higher speeds takes longer. If I step on it, sometimes back fires. When I start it it starts out at a high idle for a few seconds then drops.

Check & clean idle air control sensor, throttle body, throttle position sensor, air filter for starters.

Tell us a bit more about your Jeep.

Year, motor, miles, any other recent work, etc.

When was the last tune up? What'd the plugs look like? How's the fuel pressure?

If blow-by is excessive, you will not develop the power you should.

Compression test time.

It is an 88 with approx 160,xxx. I just replaced the plugs and the wires are next. I was told the excessive oil in my filter is from a clogged ccv.

Sounds like a cracked header if all else is good.

Do wires, cap and rotor.

Make sure your intake manifold bolts are not loosening up on ya.

Do a little reading. Click on the link in my signature and see some cheap and easy things to do that address just such issues.

Posts 1 through 5 for sure. Do them. Check out 22 and 25. There is no "silver bullet" cure here. Gotta get busy and eliminate potential issues.
