On a 4wd the front DS is in the way. I did it with a 1/4 drive long extension, swivel and socket for the lower bolt from underneath and a ratcheting box end for the upper from under the hood.

So I've been running around like crazy trying to find a sensor that is right. The ones they had at Carquest and NAPA were the right fit when I told them I need a 96 cherokee CPS (you'll see why this matters further in the post), but had weak magnets. The one from the dealer has a strong magnet, but isn't the same connector. The one from the dealer looks like this:

http://www.1aauto.com/crankshaft-pos...FYmPHwodTVAAyA

But it has very slight clearance issues with the plug. Dealer told me to sand it down a little and try it. Jeep starts but has a bunch of misfires, hesitation, the whole 9 yards. The one that fits right looks just like this:

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sk...EPJ311802.html

I had the same problem when I was changing the TPS. A 96 one wouldn't fit, but a 97 one did and works fine. That CPS that looks like mine says it fits 1997s, so do you think the people I bought my car from replaced some stuff with parts from a junker 97? The intake and engine block by the freeze plugs show the engine is a 96, as well as the VIN.

Bad news is I didn't sand the dealer CPS enough and it's in there really tight, so I'm gonna have a ball getting that out. The dude at the parts part of the dealership is really cool and said if sanding it doesn't work then I need to bring it back tomorrow and he'll get his manager and make this right.

So I decided to get a 1997 CPS and try that out since a 1997 TPS worked in my 96 and I'm at the end of the line with ideas on what to do. Installed it, it fires up, idles fine, but as soon as I hit about 1500 RPM, it'll start backfiring. Please tell me someone knows what's wrong. It's not throwing any codes. I already tried resetting the computer twice, both times with the same result.

For 87-90 Renix Jeeps, (but the CPS is in the same place)

To change your CPS I found if you BACK the fronts onto ramps, you won't have them in the way, where you need to lay. A stand under the left front frame would be in your way.

If CPS itself is putting out less than .35 Volts AC, unplugged, while it's cranking with a good battery, or the resistance is not 200 ohm's plus/minus 75, hot;

11mm socket > 3 inch extension > universal > long (18-24 inches of extension). Your feet are sticking out under the passenger side, you can reach up past the front drive-line with your left hand to hold the CPS from the front. Your right hand is on the ratchet way back by the tranny cross member. If you tie a long string on the old plug, you can use it to haul up the new. Toss that piece of plastic if it's still there, and do not drop the bolts in there! Echlin # CSS980, (from Napa, for 87-90), should be fine, but some prefer to go to Jeep. I wouldn't bother with anything else for that.

If your left forearm is bigger than a quart Mason jar, you might consider removing the front drive-line. Also You might cut your old CPS wires if they go through a deal on a bell housing bolt, then be sure your new are held somewhere safe.

The second one is REALLY easy!

Btw. I had intermittent stalling and was surprised to find my CPS was OK. Turns out adjusting my TPS solved it. They are not adjustable past 90, but I thought I'd mention that.

I gather it serves no useful purpose. My Brown 90 has been fine without it for 12 years. (even the lower inspection plate, I don't seem to need) I should try to find that one of these days though. The job can be enough of a pain without worrying about that plastic! (plus I'm parroting someone with a bit more experience than myself)

I thought it was there so the mounting bolts don't accidently fall in the bell housing? Maybe also keeps some debris out. Hard to tell at that angle since I can't get a great look at it. I pulled it off once to get a look at it one of the times I changed the CPS, but I put it back on.

Good choice to put it back on.

See your other thread about your CPS issues. I just replied.
