So i test drove 2 different xj's, one was a 2000 and one 1999. Both of them while in 4 wheel drive turning in either direction sharply makes a loud moaning sound, not grinding or popping. The 2000 xj has had ALL the oil changed in the front/rear dif, transfer case, transmission, engine oil. My 1995 xj doesn't make a noise like that while doing the same thing. I searched the forum about turning while in 4wd & all i get is grinding/popping/clunking noises while turning not moaning/groaning noises. Is this a normal noise while on dry pavement in 97-01 xj's?

Bad idea if it's a part time system.

 

My 2000 does it even in 2WD it's the power steering pump making the noise on mine and its a brand new pump.

 

Normal. My 2001 has done that a long as I've had it 50xxx-100xxx miles

 

My 2000 doesn't moan but there is some noise when it's engaged. Mine is very light and not real noticeable but I don't use it on dry pavement either.

 

Moaning and is whining? That indeed could be the power steering pump as full turn(the only oil not mentioned as changed)

I know on the 2000 xj the power steering pump was replaced with reconditioned one a couple years ago according to records.

 

I tried three pumps recondition never worked right ended up getting used junkyard one worked perfect...

 

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't turning sharp in 4x4 bad for it?

 

Depends on surface, selected mode, speed and corner angle
