Default Measuring lift height?

Is there a way to measure the amount of lift you actually have. For instance buying shocks. How can you tell?

stock height of our cherokees are 17 inches from bottum of the wheel well to the center cap of the tire. and the back is roughly the same. so go from 17 and see how many inches you got on top of that

get the ride hight where it should be stock. then after the lift. why?? Are you tring to buy shocks form a local part store? If so get the part number off what you got or in a lift kit so they can cross them
