well........ all this time i thought my valve seals were bad. noticed going down the road it periodicaly smokes... correct me if im wrong but my rings are bad right?..

 

the valve seals could have completly disintegrated causing a constant leak, so your rings might be ok

 

eather way this is not good.. whats the worse that can happen if i don't change them for some time (this is my DD)

 

a lot of oil useage, plugs fouling, destroying the converter, 02 sensors, possible poor fuel economy

 

Rent a compression tester and give it hell. Do a dry and wet test and write down your findings. Mother Mopar used hard rings and hard steel for the bores so I am leaning towards valve guides/seals are worn.

are you experienced enough to take the valve cover off and take a peek in there? doesn't take any specialty tools.
oh, you can also take off the manifolds and look in there, see if you can spot oil residue.
I had a mighty max that smoked out streets all the time. found out that it threw out a valve guide and i was too lazy to look for it. after the mechanic charged me $345 to do some unnecessary minor maintenance and tell me that he's sure i have busted a ring, i took off the exhaust manifold and actually felt in there and found the problem. I was going through 1 quart per 100-120 miles. although i was getting more power because of the backpressure created on exhaust side by burning oil.

 

sorry your jeep needs a little motor work, but i'd rather flip mine, total it out, break both my legs then to find out I or a loved one has cancer ever again. just my personal choice I guess.

 

yea that was a bad comparison...lol good luck with the jeep though,i would just try and find another engine,and put it in yourself.

 

anybody know what happend to interstate motors? and yeah i just thought about it bad choice of words.. specialy sence i just got out of a funeral last saturday from someone who died of cancer and i cried my eyes out. but interstate motors was a company that traded rebuild motors for ones that need a rebuild.. cant find them anywhere.

 

if i take the valve cover off do i have to replace the gasket?

 

it would be wise to replace so it does not leak, its hard to tell if the valve seals are bad just by looking at them unless they're completely gone

if it is valve seals, it will smoke when you let off the gas. Oil blowing past the rings is when you get on it or all the time, becoming worse under acceleration.

 

If there not completeley shot just runing some marvel misterey oil through with your gas does a great job for your whole valvetrain. If you suspect the rings just pull the plugs and pour marvel misterey oil in each cylender and let it sit for a day and alot of times the rings will reseat themselves. It only costs a few bucks and worst case cenario is it wont do anything.If its only a little bit of smoke I would bet that would fix it.
