OK Guys, maybe someone here will know. For some odd reason I STILL have a slight shimmy at 50-54mph. I have done- Track bar, steering stabilizer, new tires, replaced a bent rim, got the tires balanced too many times to count. Passenger side U joint, drivers seems good. ummmm everything but the drag link seems in pretty good shape. once I get over 55mph'ish its gone. No death wobble, just a shimmy. Anyone got any ideas besides replace the drag link? I really don't have the money to throw at it right now. So I cant just replace anything and everything.

The jeep is a 2000 Jeep xj 4x4 with roughly 150k miles.

Maybe just try rotating the tires. Last time I got an allignment, I had a shimmy. I went back in and they checked the balance. They tried rotating the tires and it went away.

+1. Could be a broken belt in a tire. Switch fronts w/ rears.

shimmy shimmy coco pops
Is it stock? U-joints and parts outside of the steering won't typically contribute to a shimmy. You didn't mention an alignment. How did you test the condition of your ball joints and Rod ends? BJs put front on Jack stands and use a long bar to pet up on the tire and have SOMEONE WATCH for movement. RE remove one stand and unlock steering wheel, grab suspended tire and forcefully move to and fro with someone watching. If all is tight and your sure it's a shimmy and not something like drive line vibration you most likely have something that it's bent.
I'm all in for tonight, I'll check you back tomorrow to see how you're doing. Best!

How are they balancing the tires? You might want to find someplace that does a road force balance if you haven't already.

Alignment was done yesterday cause I had some bad feathering on the front tires. The rears which were on the front before rotation were road force balanced, the fronts were not, they were just regular balanced, so I may have them road force balanced and see if that fixes it...

I'm going through the same exact situation. I've replaced the complete steering setup, new tires, balanced multiple times, aligned multiple times, rims aren't bent, both axle u joints, and all ball joints. I still have that shimmy. The last thing I can possibly think of is the control arm bushings, which I have yet to do.

You didn't answer if it was in stock form. very important to help diagnose. Tire feathering is an "alignment" issue or one sort or another. Is it Stock?

Sorry, it is stock, and I had a guy with alot more XJ experience than me look over my jeep and he said all the bushings look fine only thing we could think of was the ball joints but it didnt seem to be the case when testing them.

I got the front wheels road force balanced today and they said they were off by about 1oz each, would this be enough to cause a shake?

You drove it home, no? How did it do? Any amount of imbalance is enough to do something. Some vehicles are more sensitive than others. Besides the imbalance won't cause feathering. If you've checked everything properly and there are no obvious part problems then something is bent, axle housing? This should have been evident by the alignment Mech. Hate to say it but check your mechanic some aren't up to finding more difficult problems.

lol, well I knew the feathering was from the alignment being off so thats why I got the alignment done.

As for driving it home, SADLY there isnt a place on my way home to go 50+ lol. But I did push it and get it right near 50ish and it seemed to be gone (hopefully I didnt just jinx myself) lol
