When ever I go in the slightest mud/ dirt road/ bump or something the shifting especially in the low gears (in and out) becomes difficult. I have had days where I think I cannot get home because I cannot get into gear at all. Reverse does not seem to suffer this problem. Car wash seems to help.


Other than washing the Jeep, what should I do or look out for?

I'm not sure how the shift linkage is routed, but perhaps you're getting mud and gunk up in there which is binding it up?

 

It would help with the year, engine, mileage etc.

When was the last time you had the clutch replaced? Transmission fluid replaced? What type of fluid did you use?

It's really odd that dirty vs. clean would make much of a difference though... but I'm thinking modern AX15, NV3350 style, so maybe yours is something else.

 

Ops I apologize, it is a 92 XJ. SI 6 4x4.

No idea of last time time the clutch or transmission fluid was replace. I don't know what kind of fluid was used.
