Default 86 4 cylinder 2.5 Liter help

Hey there;

So I bought a manual 1986 Cherokee with 92,000 miles on it last May. Since then I have put 12,000 miles on it, and it's been great. Made it to Yellowstone and back no problems. It's been at high elevation all it's life. In the past week however, problems have arisen with shifting, and the rpm increased significantly. For about two days it was only difficult to shift on occasion, in the lower gears, the next day I went to start it and could barely get it into reverse, much noise involved, and then couldn't get it into first at all, so I was forced to do a technical U-turn back to the driveway.
I have the Hayne's repair manual but it isn't clear what type of clutch I have, if it qualifies as an early model in the 1984-1991 book; which consists of 5 pieces as opposed to around 10.
I'm currently away at college, my father is driving all the way up tomorrow to figure it out, extremely talented mechanic, not saying that as his daughter. But he asked me to find out which type of clutch system it is, and after much googling I am wondering if anyone here knows? Or if you have any experience with these types of problems and know what the issue could be, mostly so we can pair down which tools he should bring.

Thanks so much, this Jeep is my first car, I am unbelievably proud to be a Jeep owner, check the fluids regularly, change my own oil, and more than anything want to keep her in top shape! Any advice is appreciated!

Hi Rachel, welcome to CF. First of all, how many gears do you have?

If it's a manual you have either the Aisin-Warner AX5 5-speed manual (the more common one) or the Borg-Warner T-5 5-speed manual. Aisin-Warner also made the AX4 4-speed manual but that only came on the 4-cylinder.
