Default Major oil leak at filter adaptor

I had an oil leak at the filter adaptor which got progressively worse, so I changed the O rings in the adaptor, did the regular oil change and new filter (ryco). After 20 mins hiway driving I stopped and could see oil pouring from the adaptor (lost about 1 1/2 litres). So left vehicle, returned with Torx 60 and reseated the adapter and O rings. Nothing aparently wrong. Started the engine, no leaks. Drove home checking every 5 mins, no leaks so all ok. Got home and oil was pouring out again. Am unsure of the oil pressure. The sender did not work so replaced it and still didnt work so I had left it...
Is the problem a) the filter b) oil pressure relief valve c) in the adaptor?

What year?
Where did you get the o-rings?
Did you lube the o-rings before installation?

Sounds like you need to redo the job. I'll bet an o-ring broke.

Thanks for your reply. Its a 94 Cherokee, 4.0 I6. I bought genuine O rings at local dealers. After I pulled the adaptor after the first oil dump I checked the new O rings and all appeared perfect. After the second oil dump I rechecked, so did the local mechanic. All is in order with the O rings. So I am baffled. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Perhaps you over tightened distorted the adapter.

I would check o ring on your oil filter, When i remove my old filter the rubber seal always comes off filter and sticks on housing. Maybe you have 2 seals on new filter.

Do you put oil on the seal before installing your filters? What brand are you using?

Thanks for the replies. The oil filter does not leak. The leak (oil stream) comes from where the filter adaptor meets the block.
Can an alloy adaptor warp if over tightened?.

Never overtightened one so I can't answer. I'll bet that upon more detailed inspection you will find a split o-ring.

I finally got the problem sorted - the Ryco oil filter was bad. I replaced it and problem stopped. I dont believe this is common. It was especially difficult given I put the new 'bad' filter on when I did the O rings - it sent me in the wrong direction for problem solving. I was thinking bad o rings, or pressure relief valve etc

Ryco? How much money and time did that cheap piece of crap save you in the long run?

Sometimes people don't have the money... But seriously, quality oil filters save a lot of headaches in that one-in-a-hundred situation. (And they're better for your engine!)
