Nice 'how-to' for the differentials. I was wondering though. I remember a mechanic using carb cleaner, I believe, to spray down the entire inside of the diff he could get too to help clean out any gunk/oil that didn't just pour out. Do you do this or know if it is legit? I don't want to do anything stupid now, but I imagine that the PO on my XJ didn't take care of it.

That differential drain plug needs to be cleaned out really well, prior to sticking your wrench in there. If you strip it out, it is "no fun".

I've done that tons of times...It's not really necessary since that very small amount won't hurt the new stuff. And you want to use brake cleaner, carb cleaner leaves a film behind (It had a lube that stays behind to lube throttle shafts).

Interesting degreaser for things....
Coke (2Lts. of Classic works the best)
A paste/slurry made of tide powder and water Works great with a stainless brush...
Purple Power
Greased Lightening (Spray it on a few times)
